A Tuscan wine, ruby red in colour, intense on the nose and soft on the palate with a long finish, fresh and pleasant. Ripa is made from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the first selection of bunches in the new vineyard, now ten years old.
The Sopra la Ripa vineyard sits at the edge of the old medieval village of Sovana, in the municipality of Sorano, province of Grosseto, at 350 metres above sea level. It hangs on a tongue of land between Monte Amiata and the sea, where the temperature range across the year reaches 50 degrees. The cold coming down from peaks that are often snow-covered in winter alternates with the strong sirocco currents that arrive from the Maremma coast. The estate’s ten hectares of vines are planted on tufaceous, volcanic soil: 70% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Alicante and 12.5% Ciliegiolo, with vines between 10 and 49 years old. Pruning is done in January and February, leaving two buds per spur and six per plant.
