Tignanello and its outstanding vintages

28 January 2020

“Wine made from Sangiovese grapes and, in a small part, Cabernet, on the ancient estate located in the heart of Tuscany, owned by the Marchesi Antinori of Florence, winegrowers since 1385.“

Unmistakable, the description on the label is a small foretaste of what Tignanello is.

A celebrated success for Marchesi Antinori, Tignanello is a red wine produced only in the best vintages. It was a challenge – the first Sangiovese aged in barrique and the first modern red blended with non-traditional grapes – that became a certainty thanks to Antinori’s historic expertise and inexhaustible passion.

Tignanello Antinori is one of the big names in our catalogue; it is one of those labels that confirms its worth every year through steadily growing acclaim. Depending on availability – which, when it comes to excellence, is never guaranteed – we like to make room for verticals, such as the one of Tignanello Antinori 2016, 2015 and 2014, and the 2011, 2012 and 2013 vertical. One of the latest available is the 2016, 2017 and 2018 vertical (we don’t know how long it will last because, as always, wines like Tignanello sell out fast!)

Meanwhile, here are some features of important vintages.

Tignanello 2016

Tignanello 2016 is fully in tune with its vintage. It shows an intense ruby red colour, bright in places. It suggests notes of ripe red fruit that blend with hints of fresh blackberry and berries. Aromas of vanilla, dark chocolate and light spices join in. In the mouth, Tignanello 2016 is vibrant, balanced and intense on the finish, complex and persistent; its tannins are silky and refined.

The 2016 is the fruit of favourable weather: a mild autumn and winter with little rain, and a lovely spring that encouraged early budbreak. The summer, hot and dry, brought no excessive heat peaks; the grapes grew in optimal conditions. The harvest began on 23 September 2016 with the Sangiovese grapes, continued at the end of the month with Cabernet Franc and ended, before mid-October, with the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Tignanello 2015

The colour remains intense, a wonderful ruby red, and the red fruit returns: Tignanello 2015 also offers well-ripened red fruit on the nose, such as redcurrant and blackberry, in harmony with chocolate and liquorice. Enveloping, vibrant, a rich wine that once again has lively, silky tannins, with a long and complex finish.

In 2015 the weather proved the most typical for the Chianti Classico area. A cold, dry winter preceded a spring that was wet in March and April and dry in May and June. Steady temperatures encouraged perfect vegetative growth, to the benefit of the grapes. Excellent day–night temperature swings in summer allowed the bunches to grow healthily, free of stress. The grapes were picked between the second half of September and early October.

Tignanello 2014

The ruby red turns towards violet highlights, and the scent of red fruit joins aromas of sweet spice and undergrowth. Tignanello 2014 is just as intense and vibrant, with a long and fairly persistent finish.

In terms of weather, this vintage stood out for slightly higher than average temperatures, which led to early budbreak for all the grapes: Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The harvest took place between the second half of September and early October.

Every year, this exclusive Antinori red comes to life on the Tignanello estate, in the heart of Chianti Classico, where the vineyard of the same name – 57 hectares of calcareous soil with tuffaceous elements – is a jewel among the beautiful local hills. The wine is the finest expression of its terroir: Tignanello confirms the ability of Antinori wines to stand out for their recognisability, strong character and great elegance. All versions of this exclusive red are available in the Marchesi Antinori catalogue.

Tignanello is not simply a matter of taste. It is an experience that involves knowledge, sensations and emotions; Tignanello Antinori is to be enjoyed in every nuance.
