From the south of Islay, it is characterized by a strong flavor, intense smoky taste of peat and dried fruit notes that develop into a final very rich.
When Lagavulin 16 Year Old joined the Classic Malts portfolio in 1989, the belief within owner UD [now Diageo] was that it would be the single malt which only the most dedicated – even crazy – drinker would attempt to conquer. Smoke, it was felt in those early days of single malt, was a step too far for most people. Glenkinchie and Dalwhinnie, softer and easier going, would be the big sellers.
The taste is alcohol, very hot and just as full-bodied, but extremely soft and velvety, well-balanced, with a return to retro-nasal route of peaty scents and previously perceived the smell smoke. Taste it is also being considered with a high intensity and persistence.
