In an area made unique by the transforming force of the lava flow of 1879, the winery is environmentally-friendly with a cutting edge project made by fusing local materials with Cor-Ten, which changes and varies in colour over time, just as the magma that from destroyer evolves and becomes fertile soil, in full harmony with nature.
The largest volcano in Europe – symbol of nature’s ardour and site of an ancient and tenacious viniculture – is the place chosen by the brothers, Diego and Alberto Cusumano together with their father Francesco for their new and impassioned challenge: to create wines that express the quality and character of a unique land.
After years of searching, there appeared in April 2013 a unique opportunity to acquire the first three districts on the northern slopes of Etna. A continually evolving project that began with the reconstruction of the traditional dry stone walls of the terraces of Guardiola – the contrada (district) whose stunning beauty nurtures the underlying motivation and inspiration and whose name is given to the entire project: ALTA MORA.
Carricante, native variety espalier-grown over 6 hectares of vines at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Area of production: Milo, Praino contrada south side and Castiglione di Sicilia in the Verzella contrada, where the freshness of the land allows full ripening of the Carricante without altering its aromas.
The 2014 vintage was fresh in the spring, with regular rainfall. The summer was cool early on and then exploded into a hot, dry final phase.
