Port Ellen is considered to be one of Scotland’s best distilleries in the production of Single Malt Whiskey. It was founded in 1825 by Alexander Ker Mackay and is located on the southern coast of Islay, not far from the port city from which it takes its name. After several changes of ownership, whiskey production ceased in 1929 but continued to produce barley malt with its 4 stills, supplying most of the island’s distilleries. In 1967 the plant was completely renovated but, due to the decline in the scotch whiskey market in the 1980s, the distillery had to close its doors permanently in 1983. In the meantime, both some independent releases and some official bottlings from aged historic barrels had come out from 20 to 35 years. The barrels inside the distillery are about to empty and the labels on the market are destined to disappear. Port Ellen whiskeys produced since then have quickly become some of the rarest and most sought after Scotches in the world, prized for their exceptional quality and unmistakable character, a true object of worship and desire for aficionados and collectors.<\/p>\n
