An enchanting land, extraordinary producers and wines that are appreciated well beyond Italy’s borders: in Franciacorta, wine is a growing asset, because in one of Italy’s most important sparkling wine areas winemaking is ambitious and looks to the future with a desire for continuous growth.

Franciacorta is a land, a method and a wine. Indeed, to say “Franciacorta sparkling wine” is almost redundant; Franciacorta speaks for itself and, what’s more, the production rules forbid the word “spumante” on the label. For us as consumers, though, whether or not we talk about Franciacorta sparkling wines is merely a matter of form.

But let’s get to the substance. Here is a brief overview of the production and the production rules, leading up to our suggestions, some of the best Franciacorta wines:

Franciacorta: still and sparkling wines

The Franciacorta DOCG appellation

Wineries in Franciacorta:

Ca’ del Bosco

Bellavista

Antica Fratta

Majolini

Uberti

Franciacorta in a special edition

Franciacorta Satèn

Franciacorta Rosé

Franciacorta Millesimato

Franciacorta: still and sparkling wines

Before getting to the heart of the matter, it should be said that among Franciacorta wines, besides the better-known sparkling wines, there are also three appellations: Curtefranca Bianco, Curtefranca Rosso and Sebino IGT. Reds and whites, always made with an approach aimed at protecting and enhancing the Franciacorta appellations and wines.

As for the more famous bubbles, Franciacorta offers several styles, including Satén, Rosé, Millesimato and Riserva, but the one that undoubtedly stands out above all is the Brut, the first in Italy to receive DOCG status.

The Franciacorta DOCG appellation

As well as for its organoleptic qualities, Franciacorta stands out on the wine scene for having been the first in Italy to obtain the Denominazione d’Origine Controllata e Garantita. A sign of the sparkling wine’s exclusivity, in terms of both origin and production method, and a guarantee of quality.

The value of such recognition is nothing new to Franciacorta, which had already obtained DOC status in 1967. With the arrival of the DOCG, this land and its wines gained great prestige, accompanied by new incentives and a desire to do ever better on the part of the local producers who are behind Franciacorta’s great success.

As proof of this continuous and renewed commitment by all the Franciacorta wineries, the latest prestigious appellation, Curtefranca, arrived in 2008.

As with all production rules, the DOCG imposes precise requirements on Franciacorta wines for them to bear the name. These include provisions on the territory and on the production method; for example, the Franciacorta DOCG appellation is reserved for wines made only by secondary fermentation in the bottle, with the sediment removed by disgorgement, according to the conditions and requirements set out in the rules themselves.

The grapes used for Franciacorta DOCG, moreover, come from specific areas and municipalities in the province of Brescia, not from all of them. Then there are the rules on ampelography, viticulture, winemaking and more; every detail, even the most apparently insignificant, is a sign of a recognisable and unrivalled style and quality.

Wineries in Franciacorta

What set in motion the powerful machine that gave birth to Franciacorta DOCG was the talent, hard work and strong passion of Lombardy’s producers. Excellent wineries that continue to keep a precise commitment: to maintain the quality of Franciacorta at the very highest level.

With their splendid settings and a hospitality perfectly in tune with the magic of the land, the Franciacorta wineries have over the years become sought-after destinations for visits and tastings too; each of them, from the smallest to the best known, can boast its own philosophy and character which, taken together, help to give value to Franciacorta and its wines.

Among the wineries in Franciacorta we find names that are important on the international scene too, historic estates and more niche producers, with results that always live up to high expectations.

Ca’ del Bosco

It is undoubtedly one of the best known, a name that evokes values such as quality, prestige and Italian style: Ca’ del Bosco is Franciacorta, one of the first wineries to grasp the essence of this land and turn it into outstanding wines.

With its Ca’ del Bosco Franciacorta wines it fulfils the dream of a young Maurizio Zanella: to achieve extraordinary results tied to his own land, just as happens with Champagne. It does so through tradition, territory and dedication, but also hard work, passion and time, values that together shape Ca’ del Bosco’s philosophy and production style.

Ca’ del Bosco was the first estate to express the quality potential of the area and, as early as the 1970s, it played a leading role in a true renaissance of Italian wine. What followed was enough to turn Ca’ del Bosco into one of the most modern and advanced wineries in Italy.

What sets these Franciacorta wines apart is also their unique method, the Ca’ del Bosco Method.

As soon as they are picked, the grapes are sorted and chilled, and every bunch is selected before going through the exclusive washing and whirlpool system, the “berry spa”. After crushing in the absence of oxygen, the must ferments in small oak barrels or vats, and mobile tanks make it easier to move musts and wines by gravity. Further decisive and meticulously controlled stages follow, such as long ageing on the lees, a disgorgement system designed by Ca’ del Bosco alone and the unique marking of every bottle.

Attention to every nuance leads to elegant, long-lived and more natural wines: the Ca’ del Bosco Franciacorta.

Bellavista

Another leading name in the Franciacorta world is Bellavista, a winery that started out as a small family business and which, again at the end of the 1970s, began an exceptional transformation, emerging as a strong, established company that deserves high praise.

It is the land that makes the first and most important contribution: for Bellavista, Franciacorta means a considerable expanse of vineyards in the best-suited area, in particular on the hill named Bellavista for its splendid position. The purchase of the vineyards, which brought the estate to 203 hectares under vine, was followed by the meeting between Vittorio Moretti and winemaker Mattia Vezzola, a partnership that proved fundamental in defining the Bellavista style.

What shapes the mark Bellavista gives its Franciacorta is respect for tradition, which in practice means specific processes such as the use of traditional presses for a gentle pressing of the grapes and a particular fractioning of the musts. The goal, shared with the other Franciacorta wineries, is excellence, and Bellavista achieves it by focusing on three main aspects: naturalness, consistent quality and recognisable style.

The result is clear to taste. After a period of inactivity, in 1981 Valentino’s sons relaunched the business, marking a new phase of growth that continues today with the third generation, represented by the cousins Simone and Giovanni.

Located in Ome, in the heart of Franciacorta, the winery draws inspiration from a symbolic vineyard: the “Ruc di Gnoc”, or stony hill, which was both the challenge and the starting point for the Maiolini family. Here the bond with the land is reflected not only in the quality of the wines, but also in an attention to art: from the first labels designed by the artist Giulio Mottinelli to the artistic collaborations that continue to this day. The winery itself is an architectural gem that combines tradition and modernity. Built on the model of the old local farmhouses, with natural materials such as wood and stone, it has been extended and renovated in several phases, respecting the historic character of the place.

In a hilly area set between Lake Iseo and the Rhaetian Alps, Majolini Franciacorta wines are made using the Metodo Classico of secondary fermentation in the bottle, with ageing times ranging from 24 to 120 months. Every bottle is a tribute to the excellence of the land and to the family’s commitment to making unique wines, designed to enhance special moments and occasions.

With its distinctive wines, Cantina Majolini is not only a benchmark for Franciacorta, but also an example of how tradition, art and innovation can live together in harmony.

Uberti

Another name, another important winery in Franciacorta: Uberti is yet further proof of how much the past plays a leading role in this land.
