Preferences in the world of reds are increasingly turning towards these wines, expressions of a territory that can boast several distinctive features.

Thanks to excellent production, Alto Adige red wines know how to bring the charm of their land to the glass, relying on both traditional grapes and varieties with a broader outlook.

There are many aspects worth discussing but, as always, we let our customers do the talking and, through their most popular choices, we get to know some of these treasures.

Starting from the most famous grape varieties of Trentino, let’s take a brief overview and get to know our Alto Adige wines:

Alto Adige red wines and the values that make the difference

Schiava and Lagrein: the timeless native varieties

Pinot Nero, Cabernet, Merlot: grapes with an international outlook

From Elena Walch to Lageder, the best Alto Adige wines

Alto Adige red wines and the values that make the difference

Viticulture in Alto Adige stands out for a whole series of features which, together, come together in a clear and recognisable identity.

What makes the red wines of Trentino what they are is certainly their terroirs, the different climatic influences, the far-sightedness of the winegrowers and their experience, techniques and production approaches. To these are added values such as passion, love for their land, ambition and the pursuit of excellence.

This is a territory with precise constraints, where the emphasis is on quality rather than quantity.

This is a strong incentive for producers who, with vision and the ability to make the most of their work, have been able to create and improve distinctive, highly individual wines. All this thanks to a strong attachment to this land, a spirit of sacrifice and openness to change and innovation. An approach in which respect for the environment remains a fixed point.

This spirit, combined with the climate, the lie of the land and the soil, has created favourable conditions for great results.

Although they differ from winery to winery, Alto Adige wines share a common production philosophy, which is decisive for the highly exclusive character of these wines.

Schiava and Lagrein: the timeless native varieties

The first to benefit from the values behind this know-how are the native grapes. It is in the vineyards, in fact, that the quality journey of Alto Adige wines begins, and every winegrower’s attention is focused on making sure each type of grape can best express its distinctive features, thanks to a suitable site.

In Trentino, several grape varieties have long found a perfect home; the ones that stand out most are certainly the native varieties, icons of this extraordinary land.

We are talking about Lagrein and Schiava grapes.

Lagrein

Lagrein has come back into the spotlight in recent years. Since the Middle Ages it had been the most important grape variety in the area and, after a few rather subdued years, it has started to attract attention again thanks to production that has increasingly invested in the value of these grapes. Lagrein’s origins lie in Bolzano, particularly in the Gries area.

The wine made from Lagrein grapes is typically ruby red in colour. The bouquet is broad and spicy, with aromatic notes of berries, cherries, violet and also undergrowth. On the palate it is a tannic, structured, full-bodied wine.

Among Alto Adige reds, Lagrein wine certainly impresses with its velvety fullness and its exuberant, enveloping character.

What to pair with Lagrein wine?

Beyond each producer’s individual interpretation, Lagrein is generally a wine to serve with grilled meat, including the most flavoursome such as roast beef, lamb, pulled pork and beef. It also goes very well with cured meat platters.

Schiava

Schiava has always been one of the most widespread grape varieties in Trentino, and in the 1970s it accounted for as much as 40% of all Alto Adige production. Schiava actually covers three types of grape: Schiava gentile, Schiava grossa and Schiava grigia. All stand out for their ability to adapt to different environments, early ripening and high yields.

In Trentino, the finest areas for this variety are Santa Maddalena and Lake Caldaro. Despite how widely Schiava grapes are grown in Trentino and the variety’s long history, the wine made from them was less valued in the past than other fuller-bodied, more intense wines.

As tastes have evolved and knowledge of the subject has grown, wine from Schiava grapes has once again made important strides, on the international scene too.

It stands out for a ruby red colour that can be more or less intense, very distinctive red fruit aromas and moderate acidity in the mouth. It is a wine with little tannin and very easy to drink.

What to pair with Schiava wine?

Highly versatile, this type of Trentino red wine can be served with cured meat and cheese platters, as well as meat main courses.

Pinot Nero, Cabernet, Merlot: grapes with an international outlook

Over the years, international grape varieties, which have found an exclusive home in Trentino’s wonderful wine areas, have also helped make Alto Adige red wines leading players on the Italian scene and beyond.

Among the grapes that make a notable contribution to this territory’s winemaking heritage are the famous varieties originally from Bordeaux: Pinot Nero, Cabernet and Merlot.

Pinot Nero

Compared with other varieties, Pinot Nero makes up a modest share of production in Trentino, partly because it does not adapt easily to its environment and demands a great deal of work. Yet it is precisely these somewhat adverse conditions that have made the results so surprising: the Pinot Nero we find in Trentino is considered among the best in the world.

Among Alto Adige red wines, then, Pinot Nero is one of the most exclusive. Alto Adige Pinot Nero is a fine, elegant wine, and with its unique, recognisable style it has won over the palates of enthusiasts and experts alike.

But what kind of wine is Pinot Nero?

Alto Adige Pinot Nero is well structured, velvety and balanced, an elegant red wine that stands out for the evident harmony between acidity, alcohol and tannin. It has an intense, extremely pleasant scent of wild cherries and blackcurrants; a full-bodied wine that elegantly envelops and engages the palate.

It is a regal wine which, especially after ageing, reveals a range of aromas of great finesse. Its supple taste also tends to grow ever more intense with age.

What to pair with Pinot Nero?

Pinot Nero has everything it takes to pair perfectly with meat dishes, especially game. It also works very well with white meat, rabbit and milk-fed lamb. Pinot Nero also offsets the savouriness of aged cheeses nicely.

Cabernet

One of the most widely grown varieties in the world, Cabernet in Trentino has managed to show its very best. Cabernet grapes produce long-lived wines of the highest quality, much appreciated around the world.

How many types of Cabernet are there?

There are Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, varieties that are often blended together and also with Merlot.

Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc; the name is thought to derive from the French word sauvage, meaning wild. Vinified on their own, these grapes produce an intense ruby red wine with violet hues. A gutsy wine with a very strong identity. It stands out for its complex bouquet, rich in aromas of red and dark fruit as well as undergrowth, notes that in some wines combine with the green pepper and tomato leaf typical of Sauvignon Blanc. Cabernet Sauvignon certainly sums up the characteristics of its two parent varieties.

Cabernet wine is assertive and robust, with structure and body that grow ever stronger over time.

Cabernet Franc produces wines of great elegance, unmistakable in style and organoleptic qualities. The red wine tends to be a bright ruby red, turning garnet over the years. The very distinctive aromas range from strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and currants to violet and undergrowth; with age, balsamic notes also emerge, along with liquorice, chocolate and leather. The taste is round, broad and lively.

Cabernets are undoubtedly wines with a strong, precise and recognisable personality.

What to pair with Cabernet wine?

Meat, certainly, from game to the fattier, richer cuts, as well as grilled dishes. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and special first courses, such as those with truffle.

Merlot

Having arrived in Trentino over a century ago, Merlot has made this land a welcoming home. Here it found the perfect environmental conditions to produce great red wines, fruity and full-bodied.

Merlot grapes are known for their appeal, due to their juiciness and aroma. It is a variety that is readily blended with Cabernet Sauvignon; the suppler Merlot perfectly balances the more assertive Cabernet.

Merlot is an early-ripening variety that gives the wine pleasant, fruity aromas such as blackberry, blackcurrant or spice.

But what kind of wine is Merlot?

On its own, Merlot shows a lovely intense ruby red colour. Its range of aromas is rich, made up of nuances of red and black berries as well as herbaceous, earthy notes of undergrowth, evolving over time into cocoa, pepper and leather.

In the mouth it is supple and enveloping, a red wine with balanced acidity and well-defined, velvety, round tannins. Merlot is the fruity red of Alto Adige, a wine loved for its ability to engage all the senses.

What to pair with Merlot wine?

At the table, Merlot is a pleasure to pair. From blue and aged cheeses to risottos, Merlot’s organoleptic profile makes it a perfect companion for many kinds of dishes throughout the meal. Among the best pairings are red and white meats, as well as game, roasts, grilled meats and boiled meats.

From Elena Walch to Lageder, the best Alto Adige wines

The acclaim for Alto Adige red wines and their association with values such as quality, or better still excellence, reflect a set of favourable factors and conditions, underpinned by the great work of Trentino’s producers.

From winegrowers to small family estates and larger companies, winemaking in Trentino Alto Adige is driven by a shared vision, which has made Trentino wines stand out strongly on the world stage too.

This heritage includes a great many expressions, red wines well worth trying.

Here are some of the Trentino labels in our catalogue, among the best Alto Adige red wines according to our customers’ choices and preferences.

Elena Walch, Castel Ringberg Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva

Castel Ringberg is Elena Walch’s most important estate, where around 20 hectares of vineyards overlook Lake Caldaro along the Wine Road.
