Pinot Grigio Stieler is a wine that best expresses the potential of the Pinot Grigio grape in Alto Adige, combining tradition and innovation. Its elegance and complexity make it a label of great charm, capable of satisfying even the most demanding palates.
With sulphites.
In the heart of Alto Adige, in a historical and geographical context privileged for viticulture, in 1908 and 1930 respectively, a group of winemakers from Gries and Santa Maddalena created two wine cooperatives. The common goal was to enhance and market the local native vines, in particular Lagrein and Schiava, exploiting the potential of collective action. The Gries cooperative, since its foundation, focused on the production and marketing of Lagrein, a native variety with strong aromatic characteristics. In the 1950s, success came with Lagrein Kretzer, a rosé that conquered the German market. Despite the difficulties of the 1970s and 1980s, the cooperative managed to consolidate its position, focusing on quality rather than quantity. The Santa Maddalena cooperative, on the other hand, found its identity in the eponymous wine, a blend of Schiava that soon established itself at a national and international level. In 1971, the establishment of the DOC Santa Maddalena represented a turning point, guaranteeing the protection and valorization of this unique product. In 2001, the two cooperatives decided to join forces, creating Kellerei Bozen – Cantina Bolzano, a winemaking reality of regional and national importance. This union made it possible to expand the offer, optimize the production processes and strengthen the presence on international markets. In 2018, the winery inaugurated a new headquarters in San Maurizio, an architecturally and technologically cutting-edge building, designed in compliance with the principles of sustainability and energy efficiency (Casa Clima Wine certification). The new structure houses the production departments, the wine shop and the offices, offering visitors an immersive experience in the world of wine.
Pinot Grigio Stieler represents the most authentic expression of the union between grape variety, terroir and expert winemaking. This wine, produced in the renowned Alto Adige region, is the result of a careful selection of Pinot Grigio grapes from selected slopes on Renon, at an altitude of between 500 and 600 meters above sea level. The privileged exposure of the vineyards, characterized by a cool and breezy climate, and the mineral-rich soils give these grapes a unique and complex aromatic profile. The significant temperature variations between day and night favor a slow and gradual ripening of the grapes, preserving their natural acidity and freshness. The vinification of Pinot Grigio Stieler takes place in accordance with tradition, favoring artisanal methods. The grapes, harvested manually between the beginning and mid-September, are subjected to a soft pressing of the whole bunch to extract the purest must. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in large oak barrels, allowing prolonged contact of the marc with the must and favoring the extraction of delicate and complex aromas. Malolactic fermentation follows, which helps to soften the acidity and round out the taste, and refinement on the fine lees for about six months, again in large oak barrels.
To the eye it has an intense straw yellow color, with golden reflections, indicative of good maturity and aromatic concentration. On the nose, the bouquet is broad and complex, characterized by intense fruity notes of pear and apple, enriched by exotic nuances of pineapple and elegant hints of vanilla, deriving from the refinement in wood. On the palate, Pinot Grigio Stieler reveals itself to be structured and balanced, with a pleasant minerality that gives freshness and persistence. The finish is long and persistent, with fruity returns and spicy notes.
Its versatility makes it perfect to accompany a wide range of dishes. It pairs particularly well with fish dishes such as tuna, prepared with delicate cooking, and with first courses based on porcini mushrooms. It is also an excellent companion for medium-aged cheeses, such as Gouda or Asiago.
