The Botanist is much more than a simple gin: it is a sensory experience that transports us to the island of Islay, to discover uncontaminated nature and a thousand-year-old distilling tradition. A product that combines artisanal mastery with a passion for botany, giving life to a unique and unmistakable distillate. The complex botanical composition of The Botanist gin represents a unicum in the panorama of distillates. Out of a total of 31 botanical elements, 22 come directly from the island of Islay, giving the product an unmistakable territorial imprint. Among these, juniper stands out, a key element of every gin, which in this case expresses a peculiar facet linked to the island's terroir.
The island of Islay, the jewel of the Hebridean archipelago, is renowned for its rugged and unspoiled landscapes, which have shaped a unique culture and production tradition over the centuries. In this context, the Bruichladdich distillery stands out for its artisanal philosophy and for the creation of spirits that reflect the very soul of the island. Among these, The Botanist occupies a prominent place, representing an ode to local biodiversity and an example of excellence in gin production.
At the heart of the production of The Botanist is "Ugly Betty", a copper still dating back to the 1950s, carefully restored and used exclusively for this gin. The choice of such an ancient and characteristic still is not accidental, but reflects the desire to preserve distilling traditions and obtain a spirit with a strong personality.
The recipe for The Botanist is a true manifesto of Islay's biodiversity. There are 31 botanicals used, 22 of which are endemic to the island, including juniper. This rich botanical composition, combined with the slow distillation in a copper still, gives the gin a complex and multifaceted aromatic profile, where marine and iodine notes intertwine with floral and spicy notes, typical of the Mediterranean scrub.
Every stage of the production of The Botanist is carried out with the utmost care and attention to detail. The botanicals are harvested exclusively by hand, to ensure maximum freshness and quality of the ingredients. Subsequently, the botanicals are macerated in neutral grain alcohol for a prolonged period, in order to extract all the aromas and essences. The distillation, as already mentioned, takes place in a copper still, according to a slow and delicate process that allows the complexity of the distillate to be preserved.
The Botanist stands out for its clarity and brilliance, despite not being subjected to cold filtration. On the nose, it presents a broad and complex bouquet, where marine notes blend with floral and spicy ones, creating an unusual and fascinating aromatic profile. On the palate, the gin is dry and structured, with a long and persistent finish, characterized by notes of juniper, black pepper, lemon peel and pear.
