The Ben Nevis selected and aged by Wilson & Morgan in ex-sherry barrels gives fruity and vinous sensations while maintaining the characteristic hint of orange peel typical of the distillery.
The Ben Nevis distillery was born in 1825 by the hand of John McDonald also known as Long John due to its unusual height, in the heart of the Highlands at 1345 meters above sea level where pure water and peat are always available. The success of Ben Elvis whiskey, however, comes with the management of John's son, Nevis, who to meet the continuous demand for the product opened a sister distillery very close to the first. The whiskey was highly sought after as was Long John whiskey, which became their own brand. Unfortunately, the success did not consolidate and so in 1908 the first distillery closed while the "twin" distillery produced intermittently. In 1941 comes the acquisition of the Canadian entrepreneur Joseph Hobbs, who sold the old distillery to Scottish Distilers. Throughout the period of World War II the distillery did not operate until 1955 when a continuous distillation still, Coffey Still, was introduced and it was the first distillery to adopt both continuous and discontinuous distillation methods. In 1989 it was bought by Nikka distillers. The Ben Elvis whiskey retains its uniqueness thanks to the use of the yeast used to make beer, and is the only one in Scotland.
Thanks to the integral maturation in sherry casks, this new bottling of single malt from Fort William, on the west coast of Scotland, is particularly intense and fruity, and offers notes of cherries and raisins to the nose as well as being intensely vinous, almost pungent.
When tasted, the typical aromatic notes of this distillery are always present: candied orange peel, and a robust heart of toasted cereals (the famous notes of oat flakes in coffee and milk cited by many connoisseurs). But soon the mellowness of the sherry, the fruity, vinous and almost fruity impressions
fat turn towards a more spicy and dry profile. Not only the classic notes of candied orange of this distillery, therefore, but an intensely citrusy and slightly sour character that tickles the palate, always accompanied by marked hints of walnuts and hazelnuts, and toasted cereals
with a hint of brown sugar.
