Château Branaire-Ducru is a prestigious wine estate located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, in Saint-Julien. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this domaine is renowned for producing exceptional quality red wines, characterised by elegance, complexity and great aging potential. The origins of Branaire-Ducru date back to the 16th century, but it was in the 19th century that the estate acquired its current fame. Over the centuries, the Château has gone through several phases, changing ownership several times. Today, it is under the guidance of the Maroteaux family, who have been passionately dedicated to producing excellent wines for over thirty years. The Branaire-Ducru vineyard, which extends over approximately 60 hectares, is located on an exceptional terroir, characterised by deep gravel soil on clay. This particular soil composition, combined with the mild oceanic climate, gives Branaire-Ducru wines an elegant tannic structure, pronounced minerality and a freshness that distinguishes them. The Branaire-Ducru vineyards are planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (around 65%), which provides structure, fine tannins and aromas of black fruits. Merlot (around 28%) contributes to the roundness and softness of the wine, enriching it with notes of plum and spice. Small percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc complete the blend, providing complexity and aromatic nuances. Château Branaire-Ducru is strongly committed to environmental and social sustainability. The company has adopted environmentally friendly agricultural practices, such as reducing the use of chemical products and promoting biodiversity.
Château Branaire-Ducru 2018 is an excellent expression of the vintage, combining the power and complexity typical of Saint-Julien with an elegance and finesse that characterize its style. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this wine has confirmed its reputation as a jewel of the Bordeaux left bank. Coming from a 60-hectare vineyard located in the heart of Saint-Julien, Branaire-Ducru 2018 benefits from a gravelly-siliceous terroir that gives the wines structure and minerality. The 2018 vintage, characterized by a hot and dry summer, allowed for excellent ripening of the grapes, with a perfect balance between sugars and acidity. The vinification was carried out in the traditional way, with fermentation in stainless steel vats and malolactic in barriques. The refinement took place mostly in French oak barriques (about 80%) and the remainder in steel vats. This double refinement allowed the wine to develop an aromatic complexity and a finely integrated tannic structure. Château Branaire-Ducru 2018 is a wine intended for long aging. The tannins are still young and need time to refine and integrate. It is recommended to wait at least ten years before enjoying it at its best, but it will be able to give great satisfaction even in 20-30 years.
To the eye it presents itself with an intense and brilliant ruby red color, with garnet reflections. On the nose, a broad and complex bouquet, with notes of ripe black fruit (blackberries, currants), spices (black pepper, cloves), tobacco, leather and balsamic hints. On the palate, the attack is powerful and enveloping, with silky tannins and a solid structure. The palate is rich and concentrated, with returns of black fruit, toasted notes and a long and persistent finish, with a mineral touch. It pairs perfectly with grilled or stewed red meats, game, mature cheeses and truffle-based dishes.
